July Topbox review

Well, my July Topbox arrived nice and early this month. That's what I love about Topbox - there is something to be said for on-time shipping. However, this month's box didn't blow me away like last month's. Let's take a look at what I got.

The Topbox
China Glaze in Innocence
Out of the whole box, this was my favourite product, but I'm not incredibly jazzed about it because I got Spa Ritual's Airhead a few months ago in my Just Fab beauty bag and if it's not exactly a dupe it's pretty darn close.

Innocence vs. Airhead
I'm also more of a funky, bright shade person; I'm not sure why this was picked in accordance with my profile (for Julep my profile is IT girl, which are the trendy shades). Anyway, the card says it retails for $10-12, but as I'm sure all the nail polish savvy girls out there know - Nail Polish Canada sells 'em generally for under $8 a pop.

Pure + Simple Calming Cucumber Mask
This looked nice - a nice, calming, moisturising mask - good for summer. The full size is $25.25 for 50 ml and this is a 20 ml sample, so good size.

Cooling gel
I did try it out though, and am not really happy with it - for two main reasons. First, it did smell like cucumber, albeit in a plastic-y sort of way. After a few minutes on my face, the smell sort of started to irritate me - and I generally like fragrance in products. Also, it didn't really do anything that I could tell to my face, just soften it very slightly. Oh well.

NuMe HydroPunch Shampoo
Next is a sample of NuMe Shampoo (full size $24.99 for 250 ml - this sample is 20 ml). Initially this was nice to see as I got the NuMe conditioner in a past Glymm bag, and it's always nice to try the shampoo and conditioner together. But I did try it and sad to say, I did not like this. I actually like the conditioner, it's light and creamy. But this shampoo was very runny, and it hardly lathered - I actually used about half the little tube in one go (and that's way more shampoo then I normally use). Again, a bit of a letdown.

NuMe coupon
This same coupon was offered in a previous Glymm box and I used it and got the very mini flat iron (it's sure tiny - you can literally put it in your handbag, but it does pack a punch and heats up quickly). The iron cost $30 (after the discount and add on shipping). Winners sells it for about the same price (sometimes I've seen it for $39.99 - sometimes a bit less) so if you are thinking about getting one of these irons, head to Winners first. That store rocks! Having said that, I really do love the mini NuMe iron so if anyone wants my coupon code to order yourself one, just message me.

Sampar defence cream and moisturizer
Last, I received two 2ml packettes of, hold onto your hat, it's a long name, Sampar Fluide Ultra Hydratant menthe & lupin blanc. ??????? It's supposed to moisturize, protect and resurface, and there's something about 'urban advance' -which I'm not really getting. Is it a cream designed for the city?  I'm not sure. Well it is supposed to protect from pollution, and honestly, after I tried it, I can attest to that. So here's what happened.

I put it on and then went out of the house. The first thing I noticed is that is had a chemically smell. It was a bit strange. But then, it sort of made my skin all shiny, and I realized it was becoming sort of like a clear mask - my face literally felt a thin, mask-like layer on it at all times. Oddly enough, even when the wind blew over me, I could feel the wind on the rest of my skin, but it felt different on my face - like I had a bit of a plastic covering on. It was a really weird sensation. When I got home and washed my face, I could feel the cream coming off and then my face felt normal again.

The cream - goes on white
It dries kinda of plastic-y and yellow though.

I don't think I would use this again because I don't like how my skin felt with it on, and don't like creams to be sitting on my face, like a  mask. It is also quite pricey $80 for 50 ml (full size). Anyway, if you got this cream, try it out and see if you had the same reaction.

So overall, July's Topbox was a miss for me. The products did not impress me and although I love China Glaze, I have a similar polish and tend to go for brighter colours. That's okay though. As those of you who play the beauty lottery through these beauty boxes know, you win some and you lose some. And Topbox generally has consistently great boxes so it doesn't diminish what I think of them. I'm still looking forward to the August box.

If you'd like to join me on my beauty box journey, you can sign up for Topbox here. Currently on waitlist. $10/month (shipping included).

    1. Yeah, I find Winners and these sample boxes go together so well - find out about a product from the box and then find the product at Winners!

  3. I agree with you, I need more pop when it comes to nail polish and that's too bad that you already had a similar colour! I think my Topbox is coming today, but from what I've seen, this is probably my least favourite Topbox.

    1. I thought I did fill out the survey, but maybe I forgot - it was February when I got off the waitlist with first box delivered in June. It is a nice shade overall though.

The Sampar was just so plastic-like, I was kind of weirded out!

    1. I actually do have faith that it will be - and it's still the cheapest box, so even though it didn't work out, it's ok. It would have hurt more if it was one of the more expensive boxes!

    1. I've only been with Just Fab maybe 4 months or so, and that was the only beauty bag I saw so far, but if I see another one I'll post about it.
