October Julep Maven

I haven't posted about Julep in quite awhile. At the beginning of the year, I was having serious shipping issues as boxes weren't being delivered, instead they were returned to sender! Those were several frustrating months, so I ended up using an alternate address a few months later and thankfully all boxes since June have been delivered without issue to my alternate address.

I guess I haven't posted about them in so long because I was a little disillusioned with the shipping issues, and then after I just wasn't feeling this sub like before (maybe because I've been a Maven since February 2012). I was going to cancel, so I used up my Jules for boxes in July and August. But the summer boxes ended up really impressing me, both in terms of products - (hello sea salt spray!) and colours (especially July - that California collection was spot on and I ended up wearing that collection almost all summer. Adele especially is an AMAZING topcoat that I love to pair with my Julep polishes. And Fiore from the Garden party collection in August- that is one amazingly rich brown).

Also, Julep was on the back burner because of the two new nail mail subs hitting the marketplace and Canada - Bondi and Squarehue. As you can see from recent posts, I am still a huge fan of Squarehue, I like the concept and the polishes are fab, but as for Bondi, I ended up unsubscribing after the first box (August) as comments made on social media by the CEO just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm glad I cancelled now, as they haven't shipped out September or October boxes yet, and just seem very disorganized. It's too bad as their polish formula is quite nice, actually.

So because Bondi didn't work out and since Julep has been hitting a high note with their collections each month, I'm back to being excited about my Maven boxes, and for October, I upgraded and ordered the whole collection...

The Rebel Set - October Collection

My fave treat - candy corn!
This was the extra in the Maven box last October and I'm so glad it's back!

I like how the polishes are packaged now - in little "colour treat" boxes that slide out really easily...

Anisa, Winona, Valerie

Cleopatra, Dahlia, Stevie

Kendra, Missy, Ciara

 Such gorgeous shades!

Swatched - Anisa, Winona, Valerie

Swatched - Kendra, Missy, Ciara
(Hint! If you've got Adele, try putting that topcoat over Ciara - crazy shimmer!)

The products in this month's box were the Mask Noir and the Kajal eyeglider (eyeliner - dual sided) and sharpener.

Kajal liner and sharpener

Swatches of the liner (brown and black)

I've used the brown side of the liner and it is great, lasts all day and doesn't smear.

Mask Noir

Swatch of mask
Once out of the tube, the mask is thick and sticky, (reminds me of tar!) But then it dries fairly quickly and in about 10 minutes or so I could peel it off my face, with only a slight bit of residue that needed to be washed off. It actually is a very nice mask, just wish application wasn't so sticky at first.

This month you could also choose to add on Beatrix (a coal black glitter and Casper (a white-ish glow in the dark shimmer) but I've already got a glow in the dark polish from last October's box (Sofia - and that's enough glow in the dark for me) and Beatrix didn't really draw my attention so I didn't choose either of these.

So I'm really happy with this October box (I think my favorite colours are Missy, Ciara, Dahlia and Cleopatra) and the products are good too - ever since Julep has introduced their Modern Beauty profile they have really stepped up their product line. And since I'm writing this post during the November Maven selection window, I can say that I'm also really looking forward to November, I won't be upgrading to the whole Right at Home collection but I think I'll be doing some add-on's to a box. Yay Julep - you're back!

Squarehue October - Moto Collection

I'm very excited to be sharing my October Squarehue box with you. This is my third month with them (since they started shipping to Canada with the August box) and each month I like them more and more. One of my favorite things is the brush - it is short, easy to hold and I find I can apply my polish so well with it that I barely have to do any cleanup. Wear time for me on average is about 4 days with no chips (plus topcoat).

So what's this Moto collection all about?

October collection
Very slick! My initial thoughts were black, grey and orange (which are also quite Halloween-y) and I wasn't that far off!

Opening up the box
From L to R: Iron Horse, Desert Grit, Oil Slick

Better look at the colours

Iron Horse is a glossy, creamy black. This colour is perfect for me underneath chunky glitter polishes (I like to put a lot of my glitters with a clear base under black or white polish). And can I just say I love the name! Iron Horse is actually a character in Julie Kagawa's awesome book series "The Iron Fey". Maybe there are some Iron Fey fans working at Squarehue? :)

Desert Grit is a lovely orange with a twist - the finish is gritty and a bit shiny. Kind of like OPI Liquid Sands, this is a textured polish. Nice way to update the typical basic orange of Halloween.

Oil Slick is another interesting shade - it's actually a duochrome (purple/green - with hints of silver). This is a dupe for Essie's For the Twill of it, which I've tried and loved, but I've actually given that polish to my mum so this Squarehue is poised to take it's place.

Let's see some swatches!

Indoor light (wow, love all these finishes!)

Indirect Sunlight
Direct Sunlight

I think this is a great box for October, with a variety of fall/Halloween shades (and some nice texture!) Squarehue is not one of the bigger polish boxes out there, but they are really impressing me by delivering each month with on-trend shades (shipped on time as well). If you're considering a polish sub and don't mind not knowing exactly what you're going to get each month, give this a go.

FYI, November's box is The Coastal Collection...I'm guessing from the picture, the polishes will be blues, greys, greens? Looking forward to it!

TVAL haul: Pumpkin Marshmallow

I don't think I've mentioned TVAL before, but it's an awesome Canadian company that makes handcrafted bath and body products, soaps, creams, and even mineral makeup! (Kinda like our own Canuck version of Lush). Years back, they had a shop on Queen St. in Toronto; I went there once and bought a TON of bath goodies, face creams/masks and lotion lovelies. Now they just have their main shop in St. John's, NL but they do online orders so you can enjoy their products anywhere in the world!

When autumn rolls around, they always make a fab fall scent in their smoothie line of products and when Pumpkin Marshmallow hit the shop, I think I must have been one of the first to order! Fall scents are my absolute fave, and yummy, spicy, comforting pumpkin is right up there.

Here's a look at what I got:

Pumpkin Marshmallow whipped sugar, body lotion (skin smoothie) and whipped shower sundae, Pumpkin Lavender wax
melt and samples!

Whipped Shower Sundae (120 ml - $8)

First up, the whipped shower sundae. What I love about this product is the texture - it is like thick, rich whipped cream and is so luxurious to use. Put it on a shower puff for great lather! The pumpkin scent in this is light but lingers after a wash.

Body Lotion with Shea (60 ml -$6; 240 ml - $17)
The lotion is smooth and velvety, again with that intoxicating spicy pumpkin/sweet creamy marshmallow scent! It's definitely not overpowering though, just lightly perfumes your skin. The larger size comes with a pump which makes it easy to apply after shower or bath.

Whipped Sugar (120 ml - $8; 360 ml - $20)
I love sugar scrubs and TVAL is no exception. Fine granules of sugar exfoliate skin, leaving it soft, smooth and deliciously scented!

Soy Wax Melt - 6 cubes ($6)
Because I obviously can't get enough of autumn scents, I also threw these wax melts in with my order, in the scent pumpkin lavender. You just break off a cube and place it in a tart burner and it will scent a room for hours. I definitely smelled the notes of lavender and mixed with pumpkin it is very relaxing, warm and comforting (lavender is also great for when you have a headache). (I also spied the scent Chocolate L'Orange on the site - I wonder if that would smell like Terry's chocolate orange?!)

Samples - shower sundaes and hair mask.

TVAL also gives you free samples of their products with every order. In previous orders I've gotten face lotion, mineral makeup, body lotion and soap samples; with this order I received two shower sundaes (pumpkin marshmallow - probably 'cause they know I love it! Also, a sample of sweet coconut milk).  Aaaannnd, a sample of their famous hair mask, in the scent pink cotton candy (yum!)

If you're lucky enough to live in/near St. John's, you are lucky and can pop into this very cool store whenever you like, but for the rest of us the TVAL online shop is where you can treat yourself. They've got a ton of other product and scents I haven't mentioned (even unscented if that's your thing). For now though I will bask in pumpkin-y goodness!
